2022 Hyundai Sonata vs 2022 Toyota Camry

2022 Hyundai Sonata vs 2022 Toyota Camry

In an auto market that's bursting at the seams with family SUVs, devotees of the mid-seize sedan format aren't quite so spoiled for choice. However, one of the longest-running success stories in this segment is the Hyundai Sonata, which combines great sedan looks with excellent power and comfort.

The latest 2022 Hyundai Sonata is now available for test drive at our Ottawa dealership, and to see if the new model stacks up against its previous record we've compared it to one of its closest rivals, the Toyota Camry. Here are the results.

Exterior and Styling

Both cars offer a classic take on the sedan profile, but the Sonata is slightly sleeker and edgier in looks than the more conservative Camry. Nonetheless, both cars would look perfectly at home sitting on a suburban driveway, so in styling terms it's purely a matter of preference.

Powertrain Options

Both cars are available with a wide range of powertrain options, with the entry-level 2.5L I4 engine making around 200 horsepower in both models. Likewise, both cars are fitted with an eight-speed automatic transmission feeding front-wheel drive as standard. At the highest end of the range, the Sonata is available with a meaty 2.5L turbo four-cylinder engine making an impressive 311lb-ft of torque, generating plenty of power for zippy acceleration. In contrast, the most powerful Camry engine is a thirsty 3.5L V6 which only manages 267lb-ft.

Acceleration and Top Speed

If you're looking for driving thrills, there are faster options available within the Sonata lineup than in the Camry's. The Hyundai can zip from 0-100kmh in just 7.3 seconds, comfortably outshining the Camry's best of 7.9 seconds. The Hyundai is also quicker at passing, moving from 80kmh to 112kmh in just 5.1 seconds compared to the Camry's 6 seconds. And lastly, the Sonata has a slightly higher top speed of 216kmh compared to 212kmh for the Toyota.

Interior and Infotainment

Although both cars are similar in size, the Hyundai's design provides much more interior space - in fact, the official EPA rating is of a large car rather than a mid-size one. The front legroom is a generous 117cm compared to the Camry's slightly tighter 107cm, and there's also more front headroom with 101.6cm compared to the Toyota's 97cm.

As standard, the 2022 Hyundai Sonata is equipped with an 8" infotainment touchscreen running Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. But while the Toyota also offers a touchscreen with smartphone integration, the standard size is only 7", and the screen is freestanding rather than integrated into the console.

Advanced Safety Systems

Both the Sonata and the Camry are available with a wide range of active safety systems, with standard features including automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. However, at the top end, only the Hyundai expands the adaptive cruise control with a semi-autonomous driving system to reduce the load on the driver.
